To celebrate Chinese New Year, we’re giving away three premium Chinese spice sets (Xinjiang-Style Chinese BBQ Blend, Sichuan Peppercorns in Grinder, and Sichuan Dipping Chilies) from The Mala Market!
If you’re looking for a quick way to spice up your dishes and make authentic Chinese food, these spices are perfect for you.
What’s included in the spice set
Xinjiang-Style Chinese BBQ Blend (Shao Kao Spice) – This small-batch, handcrafted skao kao spice blend is in the style of Xinjiang cuisine, featuring cumin grown in Xinjiang and chiles from Guizhou backed up with plenty of premium Sichuan pepper, sesame, black cardamom, and other Chinese spices, along with umami-heavy mushroom powder and just the right amount of salt. You can use it to make lamb skewers, grilled potato and veggies, or simply use it on anything to fry up in your air fryer.
Sichuan Peppercorns in Grinder – A large glass pepper mill with a unique, slightly octagonal design and filled with premium da hong pao Sichuan pepper. If you love Sichuan food or simply want to make very flavorful dishes, this one is a must-have. Since I discovered this grinder, I started to use it instead of whole Sichuan peppercorns. Not only does it make prep and cooking faster and easier, the result is an intensive numbing flavor that I love while using less Sichuan peppercorns. Check out my post on Sichuan peppercorns and a list of delicious recipes using them.
Sichuan Dipping Chile – This ready-to-eat spice blend makes a frequent appearance in Sichuan, served as a dry dip with Sichuan hot pot, and especially with the kind of hot pot called chuan chuan where the food is cooked on skewers. It is also sprinkled on and served alongside Sichuan-style shao kao BBQ. For everyday use, simply sprinkle it on a plate of roasted potatoes, a bowl of noodle soup, or anything fried to spice it up.
About The Mala Market
The Mala Market is America’s source for premium and hard-to-find Sichuan ingredients, a curated selection of Chinese pantry essentials, and instructional Chinese pantry collections.
Their mission is to make your Chinese cooking taste like it would in China by importing traditional, artisanal Sichuan ingredients, most of which have never been available in the U.S.
Cultivating relationships with and sourcing directly from producers — cutting out all the middlemen — allows them to guarantee authenticity, quality, safety, and freshness, and also makes it possible for us to learn and share product knowledge directly from the producers.
My experience
Back when I was living in Austin, Texas, I had a hard time finding fresh Sichuan peppercorns before The Mala Market opened for business. And the first time I received a package from them, I was surprised and delighted by the freshness of the spices. Since then I’ve been using the Sichuan peppercorns and dried chili peppers from them only, because they are sourced directly from Sichuan and the quality is so high.
Over the years, they have kept consistently high quality and now I’m so happy to see that they are expanding their product line to include more ready-to-use spice blends and sauces!

I loooove mala market! I’ve been wanting to try these blends of spices!! Lately, I saw they received some Yunnan rice noodles and I’m very tempted to make some Yunnan soups again! Last time, I tried to make my own chewy round rice noodles, but it wasn’t the same, ended up mushy.
